Prominent Florida real estate developer George Pino has been charged with homicide following a devastating boat crash near Miami in 2022 that claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl. Pino surrendered to authorities last week, more than two years after the accident, which occurred on September 4, 2022.
The crash happened as Pino piloted a 29-foot boat near Boca Chita Key, carrying his wife and 12 minors. The vessel struck a channel marker, resulting in the death of Luciana Fernandez, 17, and leaving two other teenagers with severe injuries.
Legal Proceedings and Defense
Pino, who pleaded not guilty to the felony homicide charge, appeared in Miami-Dade Court with support from friends and family. His attorney expressed surprise at the delay in bringing the charge, emphasizing that initial investigations by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) found no evidence of impairment.
Although Pino declined a blood alcohol test at the time and sought legal counsel, new evidence has since surfaced. Body camera footage reportedly shows Pino acknowledging that he had consumed alcohol. A Miami Dade firefighter also suggested that alcohol played a role in the crash, prompting prosecutors to revisit the case.
Investigation Findings
The FWC’s initial investigation noted empty alcohol containers aboard the boat but concluded that Pino did not appear intoxicated at the scene. However, the new evidence has raised questions about the circumstances leading to the collision.
Pino’s defense highlighted his actions during the aftermath of the crash, including efforts to rescue injured passengers. Despite suffering a head injury, he reportedly dove under the overturned boat to assist others.
Charges and Reactions
Initially, Pino faced misdemeanor charges, which were later dropped. However, with the emergence of additional evidence, he now faces a felony homicide charge. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 8, 2025.
The family of Luciana Fernandez has expressed disappointment with the developments, hoping for a resolution that recognizes the tragedy as an accident rather than pursuing a lengthy trial.
This case underscores the complexities surrounding boating accidents and accountability, especially when alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor.
